Privacy Policy

Last updated: 30 April 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Teach Bay (“we”, “us”) collects, uses, and protects personal information when schools, teachers, and students use our platform. We comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

1. Who We Are

Teach Bay is operated from 37 Buitenkant St, District Six, Cape Town, 7925. Our Information Officer can be reached at support@teachbay.co.za.

2. Information We Collect

We collect:

  • Account information — name, school, role, email address, and login credentials provided by your school administrator.
  • Student work — quiz answers, uploaded scripts, grades, and topic-level performance data.
  • Usage data — pages visited, features used, device and browser metadata, used to maintain and improve the Service.

3. How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • Operate the Service and provide grading and feedback;
  • Generate teacher-facing reports on student and class performance;
  • Maintain security and investigate misuse;
  • Communicate with school administrators about the Service.

4. Role of the School

For student data, the school is the responsible party. Teach Bay acts as the operator and processes data only on the school's instructions and as set out in the subscription agreement.

5. Sharing

We do not sell personal information. We share data only with:

  • Sub-processors (cloud hosting, AI inference, analytics) under written agreements that require equivalent data protection;
  • Law enforcement where legally compelled.

6. AI Processing

Student answers may be processed by third-party AI models to generate grading and feedback. We do not allow these providers to train their models on identifiable student data.

7. Retention

We keep school and student data for the duration of the subscription, plus a short period thereafter to allow for export. Anonymised usage statistics may be retained longer for service improvement.

8. Security

We use industry-standard technical and organisational measures including TLS in transit, encryption at rest, access controls, and audit logging. No system is perfectly secure; we will notify schools of any material data breach as required by law.

9. Your Rights

Subject to POPIA, data subjects (or their parents/guardians where applicable) have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of their personal information. Submit requests through your school administrator or to support@teachbay.co.za.

10. Children

Teach Bay is used by learners under 18 with the consent of their school and parents/guardians. We do not market the Service directly to children.

11. International Transfers

Where data is transferred outside South Africa (for example, to cloud or AI providers), we ensure equivalent protection through contractual safeguards.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent version. Material changes will be communicated to school administrators.

13. Contact & Complaints

For privacy questions, contact support@teachbay.co.za. You may also lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa. See our Terms of Service for the broader agreement governing the Service.
